Petition Drive For Punishment

I had heard rumors lately of a petition drive in some Campbell County schools asking District Attorney General Paul Phillips and attorney Mike Hatmaker to not strike any kind of plea deal for 15-year-old Campbell County High School shooting suspect Kenneth Bartley, Jr.

This morning, the Knoxville News-Sentinel's Jamie Satterfield confirms this.

Petitions were delivered to Phillips and Hatmaker (Barley's attorney) yesterday asking for nothing less than first-degree murder charges and life in prison.

Both Phillips and Hatmaker denied yesterday any such deal has been struck or than any was imminent.

One interesting development... it appears Bartley's trial (whenever it happens) will be held here in Jacksboro and not moved out of the area. The dealine to file a motion to have it moved passed yesterday. Hatmaker did not file any such motion.

There is also a push here locally to have a soon-to-be-completed new elementary school in LaFollette named after Ken Bruce, the assistant principal killed last November 8. The school board was presented with this request and it was met with indifference which pissed off a lot of people. No decision has been made on that.

Also, Governor Bredesen will be in town tomorrow night appearing at a chili supper at Campbell County High School campaigning not only for himself but for CCHS Principal Gary Seale. Seale, shot and wounded in last November's incident, is running against incumbent William Baird for State Representative in the 34th District.
